Black History Month on the Big Screen in Chapel Hill at The Drive-In at Carraway Village

The Drive-In at Carraway Village in Chapel Hill is playing movies every Wednesday in February for Black History Month. Black History Month is an annual observance originating in the United States, where it is also known as African-American History Month. It has received official recognition from governments in the United States and Canada, and more recently has been observed in Ireland, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom

North Carolina was once one of the top 10 drive-in states in the country, counting more than 200 at its peak. The Tri-City Drive-In located between Spindale and Forest City is where I first watched classic movies like Star Wars IV and ET. The last movie I saw there was around 1994. My son’s first film was at the now-defunct Belmont Drive-In. Now there are fewer than 10 of these once iconic beacons of entertainment in North Carolina.

Many studios shifted their film release dates due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Carraway has worked to make lemonade out of the pandemic lemons and has invited the public to enjoy classic favorites on the big screen.

If you have never been to a drive-in, The Carraway has a page on how to enjoy the drive-in experience. Facemasks are required. If you leave your vehicle to use the restroom or in case of an emergency, please wear your mask. Lawn chairs are not permitted, nor is sitting outside your car due to COVID-19.
